Tasks

Audition:

The student will sing up to three excerpts of vocal jazz music that we have rehearsed in class. The student will be given a starting chord and pitch and will sing the excerpt alone, with the piano, or with tape accompaniment. This same procedure will be followed for each excerpt.

The student may also be asked to scat sing or improvise over a 12 bar blues progression in the key of B Flat or F concert with a prerecorded accompaniment.
(2 Choruses)

Self Evaluation:

After the audition the student will evaluate their performance using the Audition Score Sheet which is identical to the form the teacher is using to evaluate the audition. The student will turn in their form and it will be attached to the teacher’s form. A brief discussion may follow if their are any large discrepancies between the two forms.

In order to make the process clear to all students a mock solo audition will be performed in class before the actual audition day. The mock audition will follow the same procedures as the actual audition , but it will not count for choir placement.
