Standards

B. Music Theory
2. Students will visually and aurally identify the foundational elements of musical structure
a. chords, scales, intervals, and tonal memory using a keyboard

Tasks

The student will sing individually up to four intervals, four triads, four scales, and one tonal memory example similar to what has been sung in class during warmups. The student may use solfege, numbers, letter names, or a neutral syllable to sing the given materials.

Intervals-The student will be given a pitch on the piano, in relation to their vocal range, and an interval to sing in relation to the given pitch. The student is allowed to quietly count or hum up to the interval. The pitch will be played a total of three times before the student must sing the interval.

Chords-The student will be given a pitch on the piano, in relation to their vocal range, that represents the root of the given chord. The pitch will be played three times while the student is allowed to quietly count or hum up the chord. The student must then sing the correct chord from the given pitch both up and down.

Scales- The student will be given a pitch on the piano, in relation to their vocal range, that represents the starting pitch of a given scale. The pitch will be played three times while the student is allowed to quietly count or hum up the scale. The student must then sing the correct scale from the given pitch both up and down.

Tonal Memory- The teacher will play a four to eight measure melody on the piano. The teacher will play the melody three times with short pauses between each playing. After the third playing the student will get the tonic chord of the melody and the starting pitch. The student must then sing the melody back to the teacher with correct notes and rhythms.
