Photo History


Standard

  • Describe the history of photography and its impact.

    Objectives

  • Learn about the history of photography using a variety of resources.
  • Present information about one section of photo history in a short oral presentation to the class.
  • Listen actively to student presentations.

 

Assignments

All assignments and self-evaluation rubrics must be included in the comprehensive binder.

  • Watch "150 Years of Photography Video" and complete worksheet.
  • Write a one page paper answering 1 of 3 questions pertaining to photo history and today's society.
  • Prepare and give a presentation on one section of photo history and give an oral presentation to the class.
  • Take notes on students presentations.

Photo History Paper Assignment Sheet

Assignment:

  • Write a one page paper on one of the following topics.
  • Choose one topic for the subject of the paper.
  • Use the notes from the video, the textbook, notes from student presentations and your knowledge as sources.

Topics:

  1. The changing relationships between fine arts and photography from the 19th century to the present.
  2. Photography as an agent of change in society, then and today.
  3. Similarities and differences between pinhole photography and historical photo techniques. (Cabinet card, ambrotype, calotype, Caguerreotype, etc.)
  4. Speculate on the future of photography with reference to time and motion, the history of color, and the coming of digital photography.

Criteria:

  • One page typed
  • Paragraph form, using an introduction, body and summary paragraph
  • Uses complete sentences
  • Compares historical references and current references
  • Utilize spell check
  • Gives insight and depth on topic

Oral Presentations

50 points total

Include the following information in your presentation:

  1. State what your topic is.
  2. What is its importance in Photo History?
  3. What is the time period?
  4. Are there any specific artists associated with this topic?
  5. Give any necessary technical information about the topic.
  6. Make sure to use "user friendly" terms. Don't use words that you don't understand.
  • Any poster or handout that adds to your presentation is worth 5-10 points extra credit!

Hints on giving your presentation:

  • Have notes/ notecards but don't just read from them
  • Be interested and others will be too
  • Go over the information at least once before giving your presentation to the class
  • Use your own words
  • Speak slowly and clearly
  • Have visual aids
  • Summarize your presentation at the end
  • Always ask for questions at the end of a presentation
