Meeting the Jones Family Task

Content Outcomes:

  • Defend architectural designs

Process Outcomes:

  • Practice oral communication skills
  • Accept responsibilities and meet deadlines

Task: To present knowledge of floor plan designs in an oral presentation.

Task overview: The students will be given a scenario about a fictitious family who wants to build a home. The students are responsible for setting up a time to meet with the family (the instructor). During the meeting the students must talk about their architectural firm and discuss the needs of the family so they can design a sellable and realistic floor plan.

Meeting the Jones Family (Student Handout)

Scenario: You are sitting at your desk checking your voice mail. One of the messages is from a man named Mr. Jones. He is looking into the idea of building a new home for around $200,000. He would like to meet with you and the other members of your design team to talk about possibly designing a home for him and his family. You need to give him a call and set up a time to meet and discuss business. After doing a little research on Mr. Jones, you find out a little bit about Mr. Jones that may be helpful to know before you go to the meeting with him (information listed below). Remember that first impressions are very important so make sure you act in a professional manner. The commission on a $200,000 house is ten percent......you do the math!

Info on the Jones Family:

  • Mr. Tom Jones: Firefighter, avid pool player, and handyman
  • Mrs. Jenny Jones: Chef, likes gardening and crafts
  • Chipper Jones: 16 years old, likes hanging out with friends and swimming
  • Jody Jones: 13 years old, paraplegic (needs a wheel chair), likes movies
