Paper 3
The first part of this assignment pertains to the experiment on sentence
recall where there were two groups, one an "imagery" group, the other a
"pronunciation" group.
-
Determine the average number of questions answered correctly by the "imagery"
group. Do the same for the "pronunciation" group.
-
Describe in words any differences that you notice between the averages
and the ranges for the two groups.
- Read the material in Chapter 8 of the Myers text, and in a paragraph or
two, develop an explanation for the differences between the two groups.
The second part of this assignment concerns the demonstration involving
the series of related sentences which were read to you, eventually followed
by a test of your recall for those sentences (e.g., "the girl who lives
next door broke the large window on the porch").
-
Provide a listing of how many of each response (i.e., +2, +1, 0, -1, -2)
you made.
-
Following the demonstration, four sentences (#5, #15, #22, and #29) were
read to you for which the majority of you had previously responded with
a +2 (i.e., "positively old"). But, as was true of all of the sentences
you were tested with, these four sentences were not among those initially
read to you. In fact, these four were sentences that were much longer than
the typical sentences on the initial list, and tended to contain much more
information. In a paragraph or two, discuss the insights this demonstration
provides as to how the memory process seems to work when it comes to storing
and retrieving memories for related sorts of events. (Hint: pay attention
to the textbook material concerned with remembering, particularly memory
construction.)
